Description of the medicine program

Title of the Program: Medicine

Degree awarded after completion of the program: Medical Doctor

The volume of the programme: 360 ECTS (1 ECTS Credit equal to 30 hours), 60 ECTS per year, 30 ECTS per semester.

The duration of the program is 6 academic years (12 semesters).

Semester includes XX studying weeks.

Prerequisites for admission to the program

Citizens of Georgia:

Enrollment in the program is carried out on the basis of the results of the unified national exams (ranking document) or in the cases defined by the law of Georgia on higher education, in accordance with the established rules, on the basis of administrative registration and the order of the rector.

Without unified national exams:

  • For foreign nationals and stateless individuals who have completed their general education or its equivalent in a foreign country
  • For Georgian citizens who have completed their general education or its equivalent in a foreign country, specifically an English-speaking country, and have studied there for the past two years;
  • For foreign nationals (excluding students enrolled in joint higher education programs or exchange education programs) who have pursued studies and obtained ECTS credits or qualifications in a foreign country at a recognized higher education institution, as per the laws of that country;
  • For Georgian citizens (excluding students enrolled in joint higher education programs or exchange education programs) who have resided, studied, and earned credits or qualifications in a foreign country at a recognized higher education institution, for a duration determined by the Ministry

 

English Language Component:

  • In the case of unified national exams, passing the English language is a necessary condition (taking into account the coefficients established by the university and the subject minimum threshold);
  • Evaluation/approval of the English language component is required for foreign students: A minimum English proficiency of B1 level certified by an authorized certificate (IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge English, UNIcert®) or EnglishScore, etc.

Or

  • For applicants who are citizens of a foreign country with English-language education, upon presentation of relevant documents (e.g. attestation, certificate, etc.) and also for Georgian citizens who have received full general education in a foreign country in English, or its equivalent education, and who have completed general education in the last 2 years, studied in a foreign country and presents a relevant document (e.g. certificate, certificate, etc.)

Or

  • In case of passing the standardized (including listening, comprehension and analysis of the read text, speaking) exam organized by International University of Tbilisi (IUT), where the above-mentioned level of English language knowledge (B1) will be confirmed;

 

During the mobility, students enrolled in the university according to the order of the minister N10/N (04.02.2010) on the transfer from a higher educational institution to another higher educational institution.

 

Before the start of the 5 th semester of teaching, the student is obliged to confirm the B2 level of the English language.

Purpose of the program

  1. To train the graduates equipped with modern knowledge in biomedical, clinical and social sciences;
  2. To ensure the development of appropriate research and clinical skills among graduates;
  3. To establish high ethical values and professional appearance, while developing effective communication skills with colleagues and patients;
  4. To raise awareness of continuous enhancement of knowledge among graduates and development of relevant skills;
  5. To improve the community welfare through health promotion and disease prevention;

Describes Macro and microstructure of the human body in normal and pathological conditions (from cells to organ systems) embryonal development, body metabolism and body development

Determines correlation of fundamental issues in the biomedical, social, behavioural, health, research, and clinical sciences with clinical problems.

With effective communication in the medical environment (including in a foreign language), using interpersonal and professional skills, provides consultation with patient/patient's relatives, interacts with colleagues and the public in compliance with ethical and legal principles, taking into account morals and values.

Performs physical assessment of patient in various medical disciplines, taking into account psychological and social aspects, based on anamnesis, establishes a disease management plan after prescribing relevant instrumental and clinical studies, carrying out differential diagnosis and making a final diagnosis.

Manages acute and chronic diseases, pain and distress taking into account a patient's age, gender and other factors, and gives patient relevant advice and distributions (health promotion).

In accordance with the latest guidelines and protocols, provides first aid to different age groups, including: Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Basic Life Support (BLS), ACLS, etc.

Prescribes medications taking into account patient's age, weight, risk groups, indications, contraindications, drug compatibility and interactions, relates medications to the appropriate clinical context.

Provides basic medical clinical invasive (simulator) and non-invasive (on a patient, including a standardized patient- under the guidance of a direct supervisor, after informed consent of patient) procedures, taking into account indications, contraindications and complications

Provides effective communication (vertical/horizontal) with patient, patient's relatives, colleagues, management, etc.

Works In a medical multicultural environment, using ethical and legal principles, taking into account patient's respect, dignity and rights.

Effectively uses information and information technologies for the production of medical documentation and practical activities in accordance with confidentiality, personal data protection and legal requirements

Search medical information from relevant scientific data bases, taking into account the principles of EBM with using the PICO method, formulates conclusions based on critical analysis and evaluation, taking into account academic integrity and ethical context

Determines the research question, after identifying the problem, making literature review and drawing up the research design, provides research (systematic review/survey), draws conclusions and recommendations as a result of data analysis.

The graduate student will acquire general transferable skills along with the field one experience:

  1. Knowledge of fundamental issues of foreign language and awareness of the necessity of continuous updating of the latter.

Assessment of student achievement

As a rule, the achievement of the student's assessment is carried out by assessment forms:

  • Intermediate (multiple) evaluation: 60% of the maximum evaluation
  • Intermediate exam grade: 20% of the maximum grade
  • Final (one-time) assessment: 40% of the maximum assessment

 

Assessment Methods (assessment tools): Laboratory Work, MCQ, OSCE, Practical work, Oral assessment, Question-Answer (Q/A), Presentation, Practical procedure assessment, Role play, CBL assessment, Scientific project, other. (See syllabuses)

Assessment Criteria: Assessment methods are measured by assessment criteria, which determine the level of achievement of learning outcomes and are described in detail in the relevant syllabuses.

Each assessment form (interim assessment, interim exam, final assessment) has a defined minimum competence threshold. Depending on the specifics of the course and the interest in achieving learning outcomes, this threshold may vary across different courses. The minimum competence threshold for the final assessment should not exceed 60% of the final assessment.

• Meeting the minimum competence requirements for assessments is mandatory.

• Students are allowed to take the final exam if they have obtained a minimum passing score in the interim assessments.

The evaluation system allows:

A) Five grades based on a hundred-point scale:

(A) Excellent – Evaluation range 91-100 points;

(B) Very Good – Maximum evaluation range 81-90 points;

(C) Good – Maximum evaluation range 71-80 points;

(D) Satisfactory – Maximum evaluation range 61-70 points;

(E) Sufficient – Maximum evaluation range 51-60 points.

B) The evaluation system includes two negative grades:

(FX) Did Not Pass - Indicates a score of 41-50 points, suggesting that the student needs more effort to pass and is allowed an additional attempt at the exam.

Make up exam will be assigned in 1-5 days since declaration of the results of the final exam. 

(F) Failed - Reflects a score of 40 points or fewer, signifying that the student's work is not satisfactory, and there is insufficient material to assess. The student has the opportunity to retake the exam.

the possibility of continuing education

A person with the academic degree of a Certified Doctor has the right to continue his/her doctoral studies, or to take a residency course and to obtain the right to independent medical practice after passing the Unified State Certification Exam. The academic degree of a Certified Doctor, as a degree equal to a master's degree (Law on Higher Education, Article 47¹), entitles to a doctoral degree program.

The field of employment

The graduate of one-cycle higher education programme (Medical Doctor) is not granted to run the independent medical practice according to the applicable legislation, she/he can be:

  1. Employed as a Junior Doctor under the responsibility of an independent medical practitioner (Law of Georgia "On Medical Activities" June 8, 2001, Article 5)
  2. Carry out research and teaching activities in the theoretical fields of medicine or other fields of health care that do not include an independent medical practice.
